Aluwave is mainly a solution provider/supplier of LED-modules and systems. As a base for these activities Aluwave has developed a ceramic metal core printed circuit board system called Alunat™. Alunat™ is a family of materials with different properties that is applied depending on the requirement on the specific application.

Alunat™

The basic idea with Alunat™ is to remove the heat from the LED chip by replacing the polymer layers that is used in traditional metal core printed circuit boards with a ceramic layer. The ceramic layer has better heat conductivity than polymer and the result is a lower temperature on the LED chip. The benefit with a lower chip temperature is that the efficiency in the light generation process increases and that the lifetime of the component in prolonged. Different LED brands react slightly differentliy to high temperatures and drive currents.

The first versions of Alunat™ was based on technologies where the copper conductors where deposited on a ceramic dielectric. The dielectric was applied to any aluminum shape or form as in the figure below.

Thermal and electrical isolation properties where further improved i  n developing the second generation of products that since 2006 is shipping in volumes.  This s  ystem offers outstanding thermal conductivity from the electrical components to the base material of Aluminium and this makes it specially suitable for High Power LED applications.  The material is packaged to fit standard commercial print, etch and assembly methods to keep manufacturing costs to a minimum. Alunat™ as a PCB is illustrated in the figure below.

In 2009, additions has been made to the portfolio to reduce costs and to add new properties such as increased breakdown voltage. The thermal resistance of  Alunat™  is as low as 0.3 K/W per sqcm and the brakdown voltage is normally up to 5 kV.
